(in Repentance)

Rotten Tomato is a passive item added in The Binding of Isaac: Repentance.

Effects[ | ]

  • Adds a chance to fire tears that mark enemies with the Bait status effect. Enemies marked as bait will move slower and be attacked by other enemies until it is killed or the effect wears off.
  • Tears that apply the effect are red.

Notes[ | ]

  • The chance to fire marking tears depends on the luck stat, and the formula used to determine the chance is:
    • At base luck (0), the chance is 16.67%, maxing out at 100% at 4.01 luck.
  • Causes pathing issues with segmented bosses, as they attempt to attack their own segments.
  • Most enemies will ignore Isaac in order to attack a baited enemy, making Rotten Tomato an item with both offensive and defensive applications.
  • With a high enough luck stat and piercing effects, the uptime of the bait effect can be enough to render some bosses harmless, such as Boss Ultra Pestilence ingameUltra Pestilence or Boss The Duke of Flies ingameThe Duke of Flies who spawn a multitude of flies that it will then focus on.
  • This item is very effective during Boss RushBoss Rush. Boss enemies affected by this item will deal massive amounts of damage to each other and Isaac will be less likely to get hurt by their attacks.
  • Due to the nature of Mother's hitbox, the bait effect will cause Mother to often shoot herself in her second phase causing a lot of her attacks to be nullified.
  • Enemies and entities normally non-affected by status effects like the Stone GrimaceStone Grimace or Red Fire PlaceRed Fire Place will target the baited enemies.

Trivia[ | ]

  • Rotten Tomato is from the Antibirth mod.
  • It is likely a reference to the act of throwing rotten tomatoes at a bad performance.
  • Rotten Tomato is the only item that grants the bait status effect reliably, even if it can also be obtained by rainbow tears items like Collectible Playdough Cookie iconPlaydough Cookie
  • The bait effect is the inverse of the charmed effect; a charmed enemy would seek to target any other enemies, a baited enemy will be targeted by all other enemies.
  • The tomato dripping from Isaac's mouth with this item's costume will leave red stains on the ground. This is entirely visual; it does not create Creep.
