(in Afterbirth † and Repentance)

Apollyon is a character added in The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth †. He is unlocked after defeating Mega Satan for the first time.

Apollyon starts with two Red Heart containers and Collectible Void iconVoid.

Notes[ | ]

  • Apollyon strength comes from turning bad items into base stats. This can heavily reduce the need for good luck throughout the run, as runs can be completed while collecting only a few items.
  • Knowing most item effects is very important for Apollyon, as you want to know whether or not to absorb something.
  • Quest Items can be absorbed for extra stats.
    • As such, Apollyon should *always* go to (in Repentance)DownpourDownpour II, as (in Repentance)Collectible Knife Piece 1 iconKnife Piece 1 can be absorbed if (in Repentance) Boss Mother secondphase ingameMother isn't the goal of the run.
    • Using Void to absorb Collectible Key Piece 1 iconKey Piece 1 and Collectible Key Piece 2 iconKey Piece 2 will not permanently remove them from the run. They will continue to spawn after defeating UrielUriel or GabrielGabriel no matter how many times Apollyon uses Void on them, as long as he does not pick them up normally. This means that Apollyon can fight an angel in an angel room, then absorb both the Key Piece and an unwanted angel item at the same time.
  • Collectible The Battery iconThe Battery and Collectible Charged Baby iconCharged Baby allow Collectible Void iconVoid to be used twice consecutively without going into other rooms. This is helpful if you want to use Collectible Void iconVoid to fight the boss and then absorb the item after defeating it after all rooms have been cleared, or when a Devil/Angel Room spawns after defeating the boss and you do not have Collectible Goat Head iconGoat Head or Collectible Eucharist iconEucharist.
  • Finding a LibraryLibrary can be very powerful as Apollyon can use Collectible Void iconVoid to gain numerous amounts of active effects from one room.
    • However, it is not recommended to absorb a few books for the following reasons:
      • Collectible The Bible iconThe Bible will instantly kill you if used while fighting Boss Satan ingameSatan. However, taking it is fine as long as you don't forget you have it or aren't fighting him.
      • Collectible How to Jump iconHow to Jump causes a sudden movement, which can potentially throw you into an enemy or trap you behind rocks (the latter can be fixed by leaving the run and continuing).
      • (in Repentance) Collectible Satanic Bible iconSatanic Bible replaces the boss item with a Devil Deal, which could be bad if low on health. Devil deals also cannot be absorbed until they've been paid for.
      • (in Repentance)Collectible Book of Virtues iconBook of Virtues is treated as a passive item if absorbed by Void. It's much better to take Book of Virtues and gain the passive wisp effect over a minor stat boost.
    • It's also a good idea to touch at least three books if possible before using Void, to get the free BookwormBookworm transformation.
  • Note that using Void to absorb items in Boss RushBoss Rush or Challenge RoomChallenge Rooms counts as taking the items and will cause waves of bosses or enemies to start spawning.
    • (in Repentance) Absorbing passive items from a room with choice pedestals will count as absorbing only one of them.
  • (in Repentance) Void can be used during the 'item get' animation to absorb the held item. This allows Apollyon to absorb undesirable devil and shop items, albeit by paying their cost first. It can also be used on items formerly unidentified due to the Curse of the Blind (Pausing is recommended right after picking up the item to properly check what it is before absorbing it or not).

Item Interactions[ | ]

  • (in Repentance)Collectible Birthright iconBirthright: Using Collectible Void iconVoid has a 10% chance to spawn one previously destroyed passive item (while keeping the bonus stats). Each absorbed passive item has an equal chance to be spawned. Spawned items can be spawned again even if they are not reabsorbed. Absorbing duplicates of the same item will make it more likely to be spawned, as each duplicate counts as a separate item and thus has its own chance to be spawned. Birthright has no effect if Void is not held.
  • (except in Repentance) Collectible There's Options iconThere's Options and Collectible More Options iconMore Options are amazing items for Apollyon, as they give the opportunity to absorb twice as many items that could increase his stats or add to his actives collection.
    • (in Repentance) Absorbing passive items from a room with choice pedestals will count as absorbing only one of them, this includes pedestals added by Collectible There's Options iconThere's Options and Collectible More Options iconMore Options. Choice rooms can still be effective for copying active item effects, however.

Unlockable Achievements[ | ]

Trivia[ | ]

  • Apollyon is the Greek name for the angel Abaddon, and is also known as "The Destroyer". This is reflected in the Achievement pop-up, which states "You Unlocked The Destroyer".
    • This is referenced further in the Collectible Void iconVoid item he starts with, in that he is both the angel of the abyss and that the main function of the Void is to destroy items to gain beneficial effects.
    • In the New Testament Collectible Book of Revelations iconBook of Revelations, Abaddon is written as the king of an army of locusts, hence the locust trinkets he unlocks.
  • In a Twitter Q&A, Edmund revealed details about Apollyon's physical appearance, stating that he is a living statue, and has flesh but it appears like stone. He also confirmed that Apollyon has no eyes but can see out of the holes.
  • In the original Afterbirth+ release (before Booster Pack #5), Apollyon was unlocked by default (except in the Switch version).
  • Even though Apollyon appears to have wings, he does not start with flight. Edmund said he has "tiny, useless wings".
  • Apollyon's locked character icon is a locked box with dark energy swirling around it.

Bugs[ | ]

Bug Bug! (except in Repentance) Using an "I've found pills" pill will turn Apollyon's head invisible, showing only his face and horns.
