General Guidelines

  • All speculation belongs on the discussion (talk) page for any particular article.
  • Avoid using the second person point of view in articles, as this is unprofessional. When referring to the player character, use "Isaac" and "his" instead of "you" and "your". Describing things in a passive voice is also acceptable.
    • "You can get the item Dinner as a boss drop" is incorrect, while "The item Dinner is a boss drop" is correct.
    • "You can only enter a Challenge Room if you have full health" is incorrect, while "Isaac can only enter a Challenge Room if he has full health" is correct, or alternatively "Challenge Rooms can only be entered with full health."
  • Personal opinion (e.g: Bob's Brain is a terrible item) should not be added to articles, no matter how popular said opinion is.
  • Shots fired by enemies should be referred to as "shots" or "projectiles" for the sake of consistency. The shots fired by Isaac should always be called "tears" unless Isaac has tear-changing items such as Brimstone or Technology.
  • Do not use personality (Northernlion, Bisnap, Cobalt, etc.) terminology in articles, such as calling Beggars "judgements".
  • Avoid making up names for enemies and objects. The most correct name for enemies, items, rooms and other objects appearing in the game is what is directly listed in the game's resource files and Debug Console.
  • When adding information that applies only to an expansion of The Binding of Isaac in an article that isn't exclusive to that expansion, or when referencing content that was removed in an expansion, or any combination thereof, precede it with the appropriate DLC indicator.
    • {{dlc|na}} yields (in Rebirth). This applies to any content that can only be found in Rebirth.
    • {{dlc|a}} yields (except in Rebirth). This applies to any content that can be found in Afterbirth, but not Rebirth (and it remains in Afterbirth+ and Repentance).
    • {{dlc|a+}} yields (in Afterbirth † and Repentance). This applies to any content that can only be found in Afterbirth+ or Reptentance.
    • {{dlc|na+}} yields (in Rebirth and Afterbirth). This applies to any content that can be found in Rebirth (which remained in Afterbirth), but was removed in Afterbirth+ and not reintroduced to Repentance.
    • {{dlc|ana+}} yields (in Afterbirth). This applies to any content that did not exist in Rebirth, was added in Afterbirth, but was then removed in Afterbirth+ and not reintroduced to Repentance.
    • {{dlc|naa+}} yields (except in Afterbirth). This applies to any content that existed in Rebirth, was removed in Afterbirth, and then reintroduced to the game with Afterbirth+ and stayed in Repentance.
    • {{dlc|r}} yields (in Repentance). This applies to any content only found in Repentance.
    • {{dlc|nr}} yields (except in Repentance). This applies to any content found in any previous version of the game, but not in Repentance.
    • {{dlc|anr}} yields (in Afterbirth and Afterbirth †). This applies to any content that was added in Afterbirth and removed in Repentance.
    • {{dlc|a+nr}} yields (in Afterbirth †). This applies to any content that was added in Afterbirth+ and removed in Repentance.
    • {{dlc|nar}} yields (in Rebirth and Repentance). This applies to any content that was removed in Afterbirth and reintroduced in Repentance.
    • {{dlc|na+r}} yields (except in Afterbirth †). This applies to any content that was removed in Afterbirth+ and reintroduced in Repentance.
    • {{dlc|ana+r}} yields (in Afterbirth and Repentance). This applies to any content that was added in Afterbirth, removed in Afterbirth+ and reintroduced in Repentance.
    • {{dlc|naa+nr}} yields (in Rebirth and Afterbirth †). This applies to any content that was removed in Afterbirth, reintroduced in Afterbirth+ and removed again in Repentance.
  • To make an entire section of text relate to a specific DLC and hide unnecessary extra tags within that section, you can use {{dlc+|options like above}} and {{dlc-}} surrounding the section. Do not forget the dlc- template at the end, or use dlc+ instead of dlc, or errors with tags may result further down the page.
  • Avoid preceding a statement with "it is worth noting" or similar phrases. If it wasn't worth noting, it wouldn't belong on the page in the first place.
  • Talk pages are meant for discussing the page in question in wiki relevant ways. They are not for voicing opinions or general "fluff" chatter.
  • When a word has multiple spellings wrt. British or American english, the American spelling should be used.
    • Examples: "armor" instead of "armour", "defense" instead of "defence", "utilize" instead of "utilise" and "behavior" instead of "behaviour".
  • Jargon and very colloquial terms should be avoided. Even if most people might understand what "an effect procs", "an item was nerfed" or "gimped" mean, it's clearer and a bit more professional-looking to simply say "an effect triggers", "an item was toned down" or "hindered" instead.
  • If you need to upload videos or screenshots as proof of your edit, preferably use an external file host instead of uploading them directly to the wiki.

Section Ordering

Sections on pages should be consistently ordered, for ease of use and clarity.

  • Item and trinket pages: Effects - Notes - Synergies - Interactions - Gallery - Trivia - Bugs.
  • Monster and boss pages: Notes - Gallery - Trivia - Bugs.
    • If a monster page contains several monsters, they should be ordered by appearance: variants from earlier stages go first. Variants from earlier DLCs before later DLCs. Take care to not break the entity IDs and variant numbers if reordering.
  • For other pages, consult pages of a similar subject.

Other Basic Templates

Other than the DLC tagging, there are several other templates useful for basic editing. More information about the templates' parameters is available by searching Template:templatename and viewing the template's page directly.

  • There are templates to generate a small icon combined with a link to various pages:
  • To add bugs, use {{bug|Test bug.}} for
Bug Bug! Test bug.

Numbers

Criteria

Do NOT add any hard numbers to articles unless they fulfill the following criteria:

  • You have solid evidence of them

Example Case

A Lump of Coal has a chance of dropping after defeating Krampus.

This is a valid edit. The specific chance is not known yet, so no numbers are given.

A Lump of Coal has a 50% chance of dropping after defeating Krampus.

50% is a hard number and therefore needs solid evidence to be accepted.

Valid Evidence

The following things are examples of valid evidence:

  • The game's code
  • Full statistics
  • A link to a page which discusses the data in detail

The following things are examples of invalid evidence:

  • Data from the original The Binding of Isaac game

Notes

  • Do not add chances for item triggers, item drops, etc if you cannot provide any kind of evidence for them.
  • Make use of the talk/discussion page if you are in doubt.

Item Pages

  • Each item page should start with a short sentence that states the item name and type (passive item, active item, trinket, card) along with any other significant descriptors (special, familiar).
  • Avoid describing the item's appearance, the way that it changes Isaac's appearance or tears, or the method that it is unlocked, as that information will already be displayed in the infobox on the right side of the page.
  • The Effects section of an item page should only contain the item's main effects. Other information such as item effects that only pertain to certain characters, whether a character starts with the item, ways to effectively use the item, and the item's quirks should be in the notes section.
  • Avoid listing "obvious" synergies or interactions that behave exactly as one would expect.
    • As an example, if the item's general description says "it grants you +2 damage until you leave the room", there is no further need to say this is especially good in a challenge room -- it should be obvious.
  • All synergies, interactions and item listings in general should be listed in alphabetical order.
    • On this wiki, articles are ignored while sorting alphabetically: "A Lump of Coal" sorts as L, and "The Bible" sorts as B.
  • "Die" is the singular form of "dice" and it's not an error. Refer to items such as Cracked Dice as such, but otherwise "die" is used on the wiki, e.g. "a die chosen by Cracked Dice".

Trivia

  • While adding trivia, consider the relevance. A passing similarity between effects or appearances in another game or other media and something in The Binding of Isaac is generally not a valid trivia reference -- an item that stops time is not a reference to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, as it is a common effect and trope on its own.
  • As a counter example, 'M and TMTRAINER share the names and some appearances with Pokémon glitches, so they can said to be references with high certainty.
  • If a game developer or designer has expressed in some public channel that something is meant to be a reference or has some other trivia significance, it may be listed even if obscure.

Seeds

  • Adding seeds to pages is no longer recommended.
    • Seeds are no longer feasible to maintain between all different platforms, DLCs and and only introduce clutter to pages.
    • Simple item testing is easily achieved through the Debug Console.
  • Only reason to add seeds would be to showcase extremely unusual conditions that cannot be reproduced easily via the debug console, for example abnormal map generation or unlocking Character The Lost iconThe Lost without DLCs installed.
    • For such seeds, the specific conditions must be specified: the platform, game mode and DLC. If possible, a fully completed savefile should be used.

DLC templates:

  • As per normal article content, use the {{dlc}} template.

Platform templates:

  • {{plat|PC}} yields  PC
  • {{plat|PS4}} yields  PS4
  • {{plat|Vita}} yields  Vita
  • {{plat|WiiU}} yields  WiiU
  • {{plat|3DS}} yields  3DS
  • {{plat|Switch}} yields  Switch
  • {{plat|Xbox}} yields  XboxOne

Game mode templates:

  • {{mode|normal}} yields Normal mode only
  • {{mode|hard}} yields Hard mode only
  • {{mode|normal|hard}} yields Normal and hard modes only
  • {{mode|greed}} yields Greed mode only
  • {{mode|greedier}} yields Greedier mode only
  • {{mode|greed|greedier}} yields Greed and greedier modes only
