Binding of Isaac: Rebirth Wiki
(except in Rebirth)

Buttons, originally cut content in The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, have become a full-fledged feature of The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth.

Pressure Plate[]

Pressure Plates appear in trap rooms, which have hazards in them which disarm upon pressing all of the plates in the room. Hazards include:

Once pressed, all the hazards will be disarmed — spikes will retract, Red Poop will transform into regular Poop, Red Fire Places will turn into regular Fire Places, Purple Fire Places will turn into Blue Fire Places, and Pitfalls will close.

Unlike Reward Plates, all Pressure Plates in the room have to be pressed to clear the room, even if all enemies are slain.

Bug Bug! In trap rooms with retracting spikes, pressing the plate within five frames of the spikes deploying will cause them to appear to fail to retract, but this is only a visual bug, and they will not deal damage. This can be fixed by leaving the room and re-entering.

Kill Plate (Killswitch) (in Repentance) []

Kill Plates usually appear in normal rooms.

Once pressed, all enemies will be killed and all enemy projectiles will be destroyed. Enemies that normally spawn another enemy or shoot projectiles upon death will not do so if slain by a Kill Plate. Kill Plates also disarm all the same hazards that Pressure Plates can, but unlike said buttons, they don't need to be pressed to clear a room. Kill Plates can also uncover the hidden crawl space in the Great Gideon boss fight.

Kill Plates often appear either hidden behind tall blocks or in rooms filled with enemies either too great in numbers to fight off normally or that are blocked from the player's attacks, therefore requiring the button to clear the room.

Rail Plate (in Repentance) []

Rail Plates only appear in the second MinesMines or AshpitAshpit floor if Isaac has acquired Knife Piece 1, and are square-shaped.

Pressing all 3 yellow buttons throughout the floor unlocks the bridge to Knife Piece 2.

Rail Plates may appear in Red RoomRed Rooms, in which case they will not do anything.

Event Plate (in Repentance) []

Event Plates cause certain pits (varies from room to room) to be filled so they can be walked on. Sometimes it clears rocks instead. Event Plates are also capable of spawning enemies, pickups, and items or deactivating or reactivating teleporters, which all vary from room to room as well. Event Plates are most commonly found in the alternative path such as MinesMines and MausoleumMausoleum, where they may sometimes be hidden behind tall blocks, which often grant access to rewards in the room that are otherwise inaccessible.

Reward Plate[]

Reward Plates can appear in a variety of rooms, including Secret RoomSecret Rooms, Curse RoomCurse Rooms, and ShopShops in Greed mode. When pressed, they may spawn helpful pickups or harmful enemies. Reward Plates differ from an Event Plate's ability to spawn pickups and enemies by the fact that it is completely random every time as opposed to Event Plates having a preset spawn for the specific room it is in.

Notes[]

  • A Reward Plate may spawn a trapdoor even in ChestChest or Dark RoomDark Room. If that happens and Isaac enters the trapdoor, the floor is restarted as with Forget Me Now or a 5-pip Dice RoomDice Room.
  • (in Rebirth and Afterbirth) If a Reward Plate spawns enemies, the doors to the room will not close, allowing Isaac to avoid fighting them.
    • It may be worth fighting Sins, as they still drop items on death.
  • (in Afterbirth † and Repentance) If a Reward Plate spawns enemies, the doors will close. The enemies will remain in the room even after escaping via teleportation or bombing out.
  • When enemies are spawned, they appear only at walls with doors (barring an I AM ERRORI AM ERROR room where the locations are random). This may help locating Secret RoomSecret Rooms, as their secret doors also count.
  • Different enemies may spawn from the buttons depending on the floor, with difficult enemies such as Bosses being spawned on later floors.
  • Donation Machines spawned in Greed mode will be regular Donation Machines and not (except in Rebirth) Greed Donation Machines.
  • (in Repentance) If the Donation Machine has been bombed during the run, a button attempting to spawn one will only result in the generic "reward" sound effect and nothing else.

Bugs[]

Bug Bug! (in Repentance) If D12 creates a Reward Plate in the boss room on the floor where an alt door is allowed to appear (After A Secret Exit A Secret Exit is unlocked), activating the button to create enemies and kill will create another one, up to 4 doors (depending on the size of the room). Exiting the boss room will leave only the original alt door. By entering a copy of the door, you can go to the alt floor and if you exit, the original door will also be open, even if you did not open it.
