The Bedroom is a special room located behind a double plank door, requiring two bombs to open. Bedrooms can be either clean or dirty; each version has a different map icon and color scheme. It usually contains a bed and/or a carpet in the center (see gallery image 1). Isaac can sleep in the bed once to recover all Red HeartRed Hearts. Bombing the carpet in the middle of the room will reveal a trap door, leading to either a Crawl SpaceCrawl Space in Clean BedroomClean Bedrooms, or the next floor in Dirty BedroomDirty Bedrooms. Bedrooms are more likely to appear if Isaac has low health.

Notes[]

  • If Isaac already has full health when touching the bed, it will not activate the sleep sequence.
  • If Isaac has no Red Heart containers, the bed will add three Soul Hearts instead.
  • The bed provides no direct benefit for Character The Lost iconThe Lost and Character Tainted Lost iconTainted Lost. Once activated, the sleep sequence will play, but afterward, there will be no notable effect.
    • (in Afterbirth † and Repentance) This will still count towards unlocking the Collectible Blanket iconBlanket.
  • Using a bed takes no game-tracked time. In spite of the pause in movement and slow fade out, the timer will display the same time when Isaac can move again as it did when he stopped moving.
  • Sometimes the carpet can be obstructed by an Urn or bed, making it impossible to reveal the trapdoor under it. Even if the Urn is blown up, there will be no trapdoor under the carpet.
  • (except in Rebirth) A bed can sometimes be found in an ArcadeArcade.
  • (except in Rebirth) Rarely, a Blue GaperBlue Gaper can spawn in a Bedroom.
  • (in Afterbirth † and Repentance) When using a bed with Character The Forgotten iconThe Forgotten, he will get all Bone HeartBone Hearts filled and Character The Soul (Character) iconThe Soul will receive 3 Soul Hearts.
  • (in Afterbirth † and Repentance) There is a chance that a BeggarBeggar can appear in the room instead of the bed.
  • (in Repentance) Mom's Dressing TableMom's Dressing Table has a 50% chance of appearing inside a Bedroom if Isaac has more than eight items.
  • (in Repentance) Soul hearts will be used to charge the Collectible Alabaster Box iconAlabaster Box first, as if they were picked up normally.
    • Although using the bed as Character The Lost iconThe Lost / Character Tainted Lost iconTainted Lost does not give soul hearts as health, they will still count toward charging Alabaster Box.
  • (in Repentance) When playing Character Jacob and Esau iconJacob and Esau, the bed will only heal the one that touched the bed.
  • Bedrooms are more likely to appear when playing Character The Lost iconThe Lost or Character Tainted Lost iconTainted Lost.

    • The sleep sequence must be activated to get the charge. If the player wishes to recharge their item while Isaac is at full health, they have to intentionally take at least half a Red Heart damage before doing so.
  • (except in Rebirth) The room occasionally has two clean beds instead of one.

Trivia[]

  • The bedroom looks similar to the inside of Link's House in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
  • Having a trapdoor under the carpet is a reference to the fact that Isaac escapes from his mother by finding one under a carpet in his bedroom. Likewise, the barred door might also allude to the intro, where his mother locks him inside his room.
  • Despite being so similar, Clean and Dirty Bedrooms have different room ids (18 and 19 respectively).
  • (in Repentance) Bedrooms are the only special rooms that are not automatically identified on the map before entering them, since shops, libraries, vaults, and dice rooms were all given distinctive doors in Repentance, but clean and dirty bedrooms still have the same doors.

Bugs[]

Bug Bug! (in Rebirth and Afterbirth) If you use The Poop on the middle of the carpet and blow it up with a bomb, the trapdoor will not appear.
